Avalakki / Poha / Flattened Rice

Avalakki / Poha / Flattened rice is a healthy and light breakfast or snack menu. It is the common breakfast recipe in South India. It is very easy to prepare. There are 3 varieties of poha- thick, medium and thin. In this recipe you can use either thick or medium poha.

There are many variations in making poha. One is either giving seasoning or adding only onions or you can add veggies too. In this recipe i am adding few veggies. I love to  add grated coconut which adds the flavor to the dish.




Ingredients:

Avalakki / Poha - 2 Cups
Oil - 3 to 4 Tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 Tsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 Tsp
Channa dal and Urad dal - 1 Tsp
Peanuts - 2 Tsp
Green chilly - 2 to 3 Num
Curry leaves - 6 to 7 leaves
Turmeric - 1/4 Tsp
Coconut - 3 Tsp
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves - 3 Tsp
Lemon Juice - 1 Tsp

Veggies:
Onion - 1 Medium size
Green Bell pepper - 1/2 
Grated Carrot - 1 Medium
Green Peas - 1/2 Cup
Tomato - 1/2 Cup

Method :

1. Wash and soak poha in a water for 10 min. After drain the excess water.

2. In a kadai heat oil. Add mustard seeds. When it splutters add cumin seeds, channa dal, urad dal and peanuts. Cook until it becomes light brown.

3. Add curry leaves and green chilly. Saute it for a minute.

4. Add  onions

5. Fry onions till it turns light brown. Add turmeric.

6. Add  grated carrot, green bell pepper and green peas.

7. Cook it for 5 min and add tomato.

8. Cook until tomato becomes soft for 2 to 3 min and add poha / avalakki ( which is already soaked ).
salt, lemon juice and grated coconut. 

9. Mix it well  and finally add coriander leaves.

10. Serve Avalakki / Poha hot or warm.
